The creation of Evenstar’s Chalice was both a surprise manifestation and the outcome of many years of envisioning and dreaming….by many people. So, who is the “we” behind Evenstar’s Chalice & Institute? Well, it truly takes a village, but here is the story behind some of the key players and our current roles.

We’ll begin with Jeanne Adwani, because although she is not a formal business partner, she is a key part of our creation story. Jeanne is a gifted artist, writer, intuitive diviner and all-round Muse-y-Creatrix! Jeanne is a hair artist and you can find her salon, “Be Hair Now” located at the back of the shop. She fondly refers to herself as a “Junker” and has been buying and selling vintage treasures for many years. Our “gallery of altars” was Jeanne’s inspiration during a design meeting with Mara, as well as the idea of giving old, beautiful or unique items new life as altar wares. It was Jeanne’s need to move the location of her hair salon in 2017 and her desire to share retail space with her salon that set the wheels in motion.

Jeanne currently works and plays at Evenstar’s Chalice by making or finding and curating items to consign in the retail shop. She teaches classes and workshops sharing her years of wisdom and learning of the elements, tarot, numerology and many forms of divination. Through her teaching and offering of services in the shop as a practitioner, she is passionate about helping others get to their own inner wisdom, their own knowing, in short, becoming their own oracle. And ever learning, she is currently on the path of becoming an anointing priestess – helping to recover the knowledge and practices of this sacred art. Stepping into this venture was a pivot for both Mara Evenstar and husband Russ Jones. They were (and still are) holding the vision of a center for the practice of the transformative arts. This would also be a center for building a community that embraces learning and evolution - in service of new models for ways of being with one another in this critical time on our planet. They see the creation of Evenstar’s Chalice, LLC as an unplanned, unexpected step toward this vision – but one that is an incredible blessing and a better way forward than either could have planned!

Mara Evenstar is a modern-day mystic, healer, teacher and priestess – as well as a social-impact entrepreneur. She holds a Master degree in Transpersonal Psychology and a Master of Education specializing in Leadership and Social Transformation. She has been teaching Reiki for over 20 years and Realization Process for over 10. Mara also has extensive experience in the professional / business world in research and development, organizational development, and change management.
In her practice of the sacred and transformative arts, Mara is able to co-create containers in which the magics of connection, insight, and conscious evolution can thrive. For many years now, she has been envisioning a sacred home for sacred arts; a place where communities of practice are born and nurtured, where we learn and grow together in community. Evenstar’s Chalice and Evenstar’s Institute are two expressions of this vision. |
In the day-to-day of Evenstar’s Chalice life, you can find Mara shaping the vision and attending to operational tasks of Evenstar Institute. You may also find her teaching classes and workshops, engaging with individual clients, facilitating small groups, helping customers on the retail shop floor or creating displays that evoke the energetic essences we are wishing to hold. She also participates in operational tasks associated with product and cultivating our online presence. Opening Evenstar’s Chalice was a major life change for Russ Jones. At the time, he was teaching U.S. and Michigan History full time at Eastern Michigan University. He took his PhD at Case Western Reserve, specializing in the history of technology and transportation. He continues to research and maintain a website on Michigan Transportation History. Russ is a philosopher and greatly enjoys doing research. His current dive is in understanding the historical and philosophical roots of esoteric systems of magick and the occult. He also finds great joy in woodworking, doing finish carpentry and had an early career as a set-builder for professional theater! He has also dedicated his energies and resources to supporting Mara’s endeavors and helping to lay the groundwork for their larger vision to unfold.

Russ serves various roles in both back-office and front-of-house support. He helps keep us up and running! In addition to managing many of the day-to-day business tasks and helping customers with their questions and needs, Russ provides shop improvements and maintenance, dabbles in video editing so that we can feed our YouTube channel and with a gleam in his eye, he’s been growing and curating our book selection.
The adage of “it takes a village” is incredibly true in our case. Evenstar’s Chalice and Institute are thriving because of the amazing people that help make it a magical place. We have our “magic makers” who help make a shopping experience extraordinary. We have incredibly gifted folx practicing the arts of intuitive guidance and healing. We house the work of over 40 local makers and artisans, and recently, we are adding Institute instructors and facilitators to the mix, bringing their gifts and wisdom-sharing to our expanding community. And of course, the behind-the-scenes back office and online support team that help hold it all together. Through this, we see daily how a thriving business can touch the lives of so many for the better. All of us regularly express how blessed we are, how blessed we feel, and how amazing it is to be alive in these times, working individually yet together, in building the kind of world in which we wish to live.
